A 14-gauge IV cannula, often color-coded orange, is a large-bore intravenous catheter commonly used for rapid fluid resuscitation, blood transfusions, or in emergencies. Its larger diameter allows for a faster flow rate, which is crucial in critical situations or when multiple blood products need to be administered quickly.
Key Features:
Size: 14-gauge (the lower the number, the larger the lumen).
Color: Orange is the standard designation for 14-gauge within the color-coded system.
Flow Rate: Suitable for high-flow applications, typically used in trauma, surgery, or critical care settings.
Uses:
Administering large volumes of fluids quickly.
Blood transfusions.
Emergency situations requiring rapid access to the circulatory system.
Considerations:
Due to its larger size, it can be uncomfortable for patients and is typically used in cases where its benefits outweigh discomfort.
Proper technique is important to minimize complications such as phlebitis or infection.
